The Velvet Underground was an American rock band formed in the 1960s in New York City. Known for their experimental sound and raw, edgy lyrics, they were led by singer and songwriter Lou Reed, with key contributions from John Cale, Sterling Morrison, and Maureen Tucker. Managed early on by artist Andy Warhol, the band was associated with the New York avant-garde art scene. Though not commercially successful at the time, The Velvet Underground became one of the most influential bands in rock history, inspiring genres like punk, alternative, and indie rock. Their debut album, The Velvet Underground & Nico (1967), is especially iconic.
