The Shadows are a British instrumental rock band, best known for their work in the late 1950s and 1960s. Originally formed in 1958 as The Drifters, they became The Shadows in 1959 to avoid confusion with the American group of the same name. They gained fame as the backing band for Cliff Richard, but also had a highly successful solo career. Their signature sound featured clean electric guitar melodies, especially from lead guitarist Hank Marvin, who became a major influence on generations of guitarists. Some of their most famous instrumental hits include "Apache," "Wonderful Land," and "F.B.I." The Shadows played a key role in the development of British rock and were a major influence on the early Beatles and other UK bands.
