Words in the Water - Thrice
This is a way to play the lead part, without needing to switch your guitar from standard tuning.
Tuning: Standard
Verse.
The timing is 5/4. If you're having trouble with the rhythm, count out each bar as 10 eighth notes. Count as
123-123-12-12. (instead of 5 quarter notes as 1-2-3-4-5)
The notes you pick are all played on the 1's.
For the 6b7r6 you are playing 6, bending it up to sound like 7, then releasing (bending back) to 6. You can then
either pluck the 2, or pull off from the 6 -> 6b7r6p2. It's only a half-step bend, so it's easy enough to do
with your little finger.
Verses repeat this pattern:
e|-----------------------------------------|-----------------------------------------|
B|-----------------------------------------|-----------------------------------------|
G|-----------------------------------------|-----------------------------------------|
D|-----------------------------------------|--------------------------2--------------|
A|---6----------6--------6----------4--2-4-|---6---------6--6b7r6 2-----------4---2-4|
E|4---------2---------0---------0----------|4---------2---2---------0-----0----------|
Later in the song, extra notes are added in. It's the same progression, but with repeated notes. Again, if you
are counting 123-123-12-12, the notes are plucked on each 1:
e|-----------------------------------------|-------------------------------------------|
B|-----------------------------------------|-------------------------------------------|
G|-----------------------------------------|-------------------------------------------|
D|-----------------------------------------|--------------------------2----2-----------|
A|---6----6----6----6-----6----6-----4--2-4|---6----6----6----6b7r6 2-----------4---2-4|
E|4-----4---2-----2----0-----0----0--------|4-----4---2-----2--------0---0--0----------|
The second guitar during the verses comes in and plays successive eighth notes. I've added the timing above,
and the number of eighth notes to play below.
123-123-12-12 123-123-12-12
e|-------------|--------------|---------|----------||-------------|--------------|---------|----------|
B|-------------|--------------|---------|----------||-------------|--------------|---------|----------|
G|-------------|--------------|---------|----------||-------------|--------------|---------|----------|
D| 9-----------|11-------13---|6--------|8---------|| 9-----------|11-------13---|6--------|4---------|
A|11-----------|13-------14---|7--------|9---------||11-----------|13-------14---|7--------|4---------|
E|-------------|--------------|---------|----------||-------------|--------------|---------|----------|
10 strums 6 then 4 10 10 10 6 4 10 10
Alternate fingering for this part:
e|-------------|-------------|----------|----------||-------------|--------------|---------|----------|
B|-------------|-------------|----------|----------||-------------|--------------|---------|----------|
G|4------------|6--------8---|1---------|3---------||4------------|6--------8----|1--------|----------|
D|6------------|8--------9---|2---------|4---------||6------------|8--------9----|2--------|4---------|
A|-------------|-------------|----------|----------||-------------|--------------|---------|4---------|
E|-------------|-------------|----------|----------||-------------|--------------|---------|----------|
For the chorus/bridge/outro, you are plucking:
e|-7---7---7---7---6---6----11--11--4----4---4---4---4---4---4---4---|
B|-------------------------------------------------------------------|
G|8---8---8---8---6---6---11--11---4--2h4-2h4-2h4-2h4-2h4-2h4-2h4----|
D|-------------------------------------------------------------------|
A|-------------------------------------------------------------------|
E|-------------------------------------------------------------------|
You can skip the 2's, and play with the same pattern as the 8-7 6-6 11-11.
You can also replace some of the 2h4s's with 4p2's.
Or just barre the GBe strings at 4, plucking a (x-x-x-4-4-4) pattern.
