Poem by Alfred Noyes
[1st stanza]
TChe wind was a torrent of Emdarkness
AmoAmng the gusty trees
The moEmon was a ghostly gFalleon
ToDmssed upon cloudy G7seas
And the roCad was a ribbon of Emmoonlight
OAmver the purple moor
And the Fhighwayman came rCiding, rEiding, Amriding
Yes, the hFighwayman came rCidinAmg
DmUp to the old inn G7door
[2nd stanza]
OCver the cobbles he cEmlattered
And cAmlashed in the darkened yard
And he tEmapped with his whip at the Fwindow
BDmut all was locked and bG7arred
So he wChistled a tune to the wEmindow
AAmnd who should be waiting there
But the Flandlord's black eyed dCaughter
EBess the landlord's dAmaughter
PFlaiting a dark red Clove kAmnot
IDmnto her long black G7hair
[3rd stanza]
OCne kiss, my bonny sEmweetheart
For I'm aAmfter a prize tonight
But EmI shall be back with the Fyellow gold
BDmefore the morning G7light
Yet Cif they press me sEmharply
HAmarry me through the day
Oh, then lFook for me Cby moonlight
WEatch for me Amby moonlight
And I'll cFome to thee by CmoonliAmght
DmThough Hell should bar the G7way
[4th stanza]
HCe did not come at the Emdawning
AmNo, he did not come at the noon
And oEmut of the tawny sFunset
DmBefore the rise of the G7moon

FKing George's men came mCarchiAmng
DmUp to the old inn dG7oor
[5th stanza]

"Oh Flook for me Cby moonlight
EWatch for me Amby moonlight
And I'll Fcome to thee Cby moonlAmight
Though HDmell should bar the G7way"

CLook for me Emby moonlight
AmHoofbeats rining clear
EmWatch for me bFy moonlight
Were they dDmeaf that they did not G7hear
FCor he rode on the gypsy hEmighway
SAmhe breathed one final breath
Then her fFinger moved in the Cmoonlight
Her mEusket shattered the mAmoonlight
And it shFattered her breast in the mCoonliAmght
And wDmarned him with her G7death
[7th stanza]
COh he turned; he spurred on to the Emwest
AmHe did not know who stood
OEmut with her black hair a Fflowing down
DmDrenched with her own red bG7lood
OCh not 'til the dawn had he hEmeard it
AAmnd his face grew gray to hear
HFow Bess the landlord's Cdaughter
The Elandlord's black eyed Amdaughter
Had wFatched for her love in the CmoonlAmight
And dDmied in the darkness tG7here
[8th stanza]
BCack he spurred like a Emmadman
Shrieking a curse to the sAmky
With the wEmhite road smoking Fbehind him
And his rDmapier brandished Ghigh
BClood red were his spurs in the gEmolden noon
AmWine red his velvet coat
When they sFhot him down on the Chighway
DEown like a dog on the hAmighway
And he Flay in his blood on the hCighway
With a bFunch of lace at his Gthroat
[Outro]
CAnd still on a winter's Emnight they say
When the Amwind is in the trees
When the Emmoon is a ghostly Fgalleon
DmTossed upon cloudy sG7eas
CWhen the road is a ribbon of mEmoonlight
AmOver the purple moor
Oh the hFighwayman comes rCiding, Eriding, rAmiding
Yes the hFighwayman comes rCidinAmg
