Every Grain of Sand (1980)
(Bob Dylan)
From: "The Bootleg Series Vol. 01-03. Rare and Unreleased 1961-1991"
A beautiful acoustic demo recording in a different key than the version
released on “Shot of Love” (which is in Eb). Moreover it is in 4/4 as
opposed to the 6/8 of the final version. The last couplet in the last verse
is different, too.

In the Gtime of my conCmaj7fession, in the Ghour of my deepest Cmaj7need
         G Cmaj7 D Dsus4* D
When the pool of tears beneath my feet flood every newborn seed
There’s Ga dyin’ voice Cmaj7withinG me reaching out Cmaj7somewhere
G Cmaj7 D Dsus4* D
Toiling in the danger and in the morals of despair
Don’Dt have the incD7lination to looGk back on anDy mistake

     D D7 G D C/D
Like Cain, I now behold this chain of events that I must break
In the Gfury of the Cmaj7moment I can Gsee the Master’Cmaj7s hand
In Gevery leaf that Cmaj7trembles and in Devery C/Dgrain of Gsand
Oh, the Gflowers of inCmaj7dulgence and the Gweeds of yesterCmaj7year
     G Cmaj7 D Dsus4* D
Like criminals, they have choked the breath of conscience and good cheer
The Gsun beat down uCmaj7pon the steps of Gtime to light the Cmaj7way
   G Cmaj7 D Dsus4* D
To ease the pain of idleness and the memory of decay
I Dgaze into the D7doorway of tempGtation’s angrDy flame
                                             (break) (break)
    D D7 G D C/D
And every time I pass that way I always hear my name
Then Gonward in my Cmaj7journey I Gcome to underCmaj7stand
That Gevery hair is Cmaj7numbered like Devery C/Dgrain of Gsand
I have Ggone from rags to Cmaj7riches in the Gsorrow of the Cmaj7night
       G Cmaj7 D Dsus4* D
In the violence of a summer’s dream, in the chill of a wintry light
In the Gbitter dance of Cmaj7loneliness Gfading into Cmaj7space
       G Cmaj7 D Dsus4* D
In the broken mirror of innocence on each forgotten face
I Dhear the ancient D7footsteps like the Gmotion of the Dsea
                                                            (break) (break)
    D D7 G D C/D
Sometimes I turn, there’s someone there, other times it’s only me
I am Ghanging in the Cmaj7balance of a Gperfect finished Cmaj7plan
     G Cmaj7 D C/D | G Gsus4 | G
Like every sparrow falling, like every grain of sand
