Ralph Stanley was an influential American bluegrass and country singer, songwriter, and banjo player. Born in 1927 in Virginia, he was best known for his distinctive voice and traditional Appalachian music style. Stanley first gained fame as part of the Stanley Brothers, performing with his brother Carter, and later led his own band, the Clinch Mountain Boys. Over his long career, he became a key figure in preserving and popularizing bluegrass music. He received numerous awards, including a Grammy, and continued performing into his 80s. His work had a lasting impact on American roots music.
