LaVern Baker was an influential American rhythm and blues singer, active mainly in the 1950s and 1960s. Known for her powerful voice and dynamic stage presence, she played a key role in the early development of rock and roll. Baker was one of the first African American women to gain widespread success in the genre and helped pave the way for future generations of female artists. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1991.
