Johnny Thunders was an American rock guitarist, singer, and songwriter, best known for his work with the influential proto-punk bands New York Dolls and The Heartbreakers. Born John Anthony Genzale Jr. in 1952, he became known for his raw, energetic playing style and rebellious image. Thunders played a key role in shaping the punk rock movement in the 1970s. His solo career further cemented his status as a cult icon. Despite personal struggles and a turbulent lifestyle, his music continues to influence punk and alternative rock artists. He died in 1991 under mysterious circumstances.
