Chely Wright (born Richell René Wright on October 25, 1970, in Kansas City, Missouri) is an acclaimed American singer‑songwriter, activist, author, and diversity officer. She rose to fame in the 1990s with country hits like “Single White Female” (her only No. 1) and “Shut Up and Drive”, and released several albums including her debut Woman in the Moon (1994) and Right in the Middle of It (1996) . In 2010, Chely became the first major country artist to publicly come out as gay, a courageous decision she chronicled in her memoir Like Me: Confessions of a Heartland Country Singer (2010) and the Emmy‑nominated documentary Wish Me Away (2012) �. She married Lauren Blitzer in 2011 and they welcomed twin sons via surrogate in 2013 �. Her activism includes founding the LikeMe LGBT organization and the Reading, Writing and Rhythm Foundation to support music in schools �.
