Bathory was a Swedish extreme metal band formed in 1983 by Quorthon (Thomas Börje Forsberg). The band is considered one of the pioneers of both black metal and viking metal. Bathory's early albums, such as Bathory (1984) and Under the Sign of the Black Mark (1987), were crucial in shaping the raw, dark sound of black metal. Later, with albums like Hammerheart (1990), the band shifted toward epic, Norse mythology-inspired viking metal. Quorthon was the sole consistent member, writing and recording most of the music himself. Bathory ended with his death in 2004. The band remains highly influential in the metal scene.
