10,000 Maniacs is an American alternative rock band formed in 1981 in Jamestown, New York. Known for their thoughtful lyrics and blend of folk-rock and pop influences, the band rose to prominence in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Their early sound was shaped by lead singer Natalie Merchant, whose poetic writing and distinctive voice played a key role in their success. After Merchant left in 1993, the band continued to perform and record with new members, maintaining a loyal fan base and a legacy as one of the defining acts of college rock.
