At different points in the song it is better to use a barred chord, this will be signified with a *.
As for the strumming pattern, Tom is using a piano so uses the higher notes followed by the lower notes
and you can kind of do something similar, jut listen to the actual song and it is apparent what to play.
I tend to separate the notes for the simple chords (like the F and Bbm) that have only 4 notes
(especially during the intro for affect), and strum through the rest, but you can really do what you
like and play around.
