EOnce a week I make the drive
F#two hours east to check the AAustin post office box.
EI take the detour throuF#gh our old neighborhood,
see all the ChevAy Impalas in their front yBards up on blocks,
and I pAark in an alley and I rBead through the postcards
that you cEontinue to send:A
where as iF#ndirectly as you can you aAsk what I remember.
I like these toErture devices from my oBld best friend.
Well I'll tC#ell you what I know
like I swF#ore I always would --
I don't tAhink it's gonna doB you any good:
I remEember the tArain headed soEuth out of BAangkok dBown toAward the wEater.

EI always get a late start,
when the sF#un's going down
and the tAraffic's thinning out
and the gElare is hard to take. I wish the
EWest Texas highway was a F#Möbius strip --
I could rAide it out forever. When I fBeel my heart break,
I almost sAwear I hear it happen, it's that cBlear and that hard.
I cEome in off the highway and I pAark in my front yard.
I fC#all out of the car
like a hF#ostage from a plane,
Athink of you a while and
start wBishing it would rain.
EI remember the Atrain headed Esouth out of ABangkok Bdown tAoward the Ewater.

I Ecome into the house,
put oF#n a pot of coffee,
Awalk the floors a littleE while.
EI set the postcard on a table with F#all the others like it,
Astart sorting through the Bpile.
AI check the pictures and the postmarks
and the cBaptions and the stamps
for sEigns of any pattern at aAll.
When I cF#ome up empty-handed, the feeling alAmost overwhelms me.
EI let a few of my Bdefenses fall
and I smC#ile a bitter smile -- it's not aF# pretty thing to see --
I think aAbout a railroad platform back in 1B983
