Written to remember ‘Tom Jones’, a miner from the North Wales village of Rhosllanerchrugog, who left home in 1937 to travel to Spain to join the International Brigades in the fight against Franco’s fascists. The sole survivor of his unit at the Battle of Ebro, he was badly wounded, captured and spent months in the infamous Burgos prison while his friends and family at home believed him dead. Eventually released in 1940, he returned home to spend the rest of his life until 1990 fighting for socialism within the Welsh trades union movement. For ever afterwards known as ‘Twm Sbaen’ (Tom Spain), a true hero in every respect. [Chorus]
