Tuning: E A D G B E
The A5 in the verses can be played as Am but it doesn't sound as much like the original. Same could kinda be said for the C/G (it could be played as a normal C). I think the D (major) fits better without the high E string, but do hit that string for the Dm [Verse 1]
A5 The first time I heard it C/G Didn't know what it was Fmaj7 I listened to it over and over D I couldn't get enough A5 I knew every syllable C/G And the space in between Fmaj7 And I wondered D What my own song would be
[Chorus]
I thought I understAmood what the words meant I thought I knew the mC/Geaning behind I memorized the sFmaj7ounds and the rhythms And wondered about the stDories inside I thought I understAmood what the words meant I thought that they were wC/Gritten for me A message spelled Fmaj7out in a language That only those who've Dmbeen there Been there can reAmad
[Verse 2]
A5 The first time I heard it C/G Didn't know what it was Fmaj7 It was foreign and angry and brilliant D I couldn't get enough A5 But the story behind it C/G You revealed it to me Fmaj7 And I realized You had lDived through what I'd never seen
[Chorus]
I never understAmood what the words meant I never knew the mC/Geaning behind I memorized the sFmaj7ounds and the rhythms But didn't know the stDories inside I never understAmood what the words meant The words were never wC/Gritten for me A message spelled Fmaj7out in a language That only those who've Dmbeen there Been there can reFmaj7ad
[Instrumental Break] (First chord continues from end of chorus) Fmaj7 D Am C/G Fmaj7 D [Chorus]
I wish I didn't kAmnow what the words meant Or understand the mC/Geaning behind I memorized the sFmaj7ounds and the rhythms And now I know the stDories inside I wish I didn't Amknow what the words meant That they were never wC/Gritten for me A message spelled Fmaj7out in a language That only those who've Dmbeen there Been there can reAmad
