Burnin Stalks
by: Verne Garrison
Valley Park, Mo 10-27-06
DLate in the fall, after the shuckin was done,
The whole family would go to the Afields.
We took Drakes, and matches and a kerosene Gjug
DJust us, no Awagons, no Dwheels
DWe would rake all the stalks into rows
Line them up with the Awind
Drop a Dmatch on the coal oil Gspot
DIt was then that the Afun would Dbegin
DThe leaping flames would follow the smoke
Crackin and poppin corn sparks into the dark Asky
We were Dburning the trashno Gjoke
DSo when we plowed next Aspring the ground would be Ddry
DOn the cold fall nights, wed hug the fire
Staying close enuf to stay Awarm
Wed keep Drunnin and burnin till the work was Gdone
DHelping out, when we were just Akids on the Dfarm
DNow I can still smell the heavy smoke,
And some say we did more harm than Agood
But the Dmemories I have of poor farm Gfolks
DThings turned out a lot Abetter than we thought they Dwould
