^D I hoped that in some favored hour ^G At once He'd answer my request ^Bm And by His love's constraining power ^G Subdue my sins and ^Agive me rest

^D Instead of this He made me feel ^G The hidden evils of my heart ^Bm And let the angry powers of Hell ^G Assault my soul in ^Aevery part^{G A G A}

^D Yea more with His own hand He seemed ^G Intent to aggravate my woe ^Bm Crossed all the fair designs I schemed, G A (G A G A G A) Cast out my feelings, laid me low

^D Lord why is this, I trembling cried ^G Wilt Thou pursue thy worm to death? ^Bm "Tis in this way" The Lord replied ^G "I answer prayer^A for grace and faith"
