Tuning: E A D G B E
This is the version from Indiana Road album - a fantastic album - a true classic.
At time of posting there's a copy here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b2ShIpjJd5Q
They use the A=432 "God" tuning so you have to retune your instrument if you want to play along
- which you should try because it's actually quite a beautiful tuning and it makes the singing easier
[Verse 1]
There's a Clittle white note on the gate by the road that a Fman put up yesterdCay,
And when we saw it we all ran out just to Dsee what it had to Gsay,G7
And Cwhen we read it our eyes filled with tears and they Ffell to the cold, hard Cclay.
Something 'bout a mortgage, something 'bout foreclosure, something about fGailing to Cpay.
[Chorus]
Oh and, on the post by the general store they pFut up a little Csign:
An auction sale - day after tomorrow - at the Dend of the Lincoln GLanG7e.
CThirty years of farming, thirty years of heartache, Fthirty years of day to Cday.
Oh, my daddy stopped talking, the day the farm was auctioned, there was nothing Gleft to Csay.
[Verse 2]
COh, my mama's tears fell freely down as she Fwalked amongst the flowers in the Cyard
And every number the auctioneer called was like a Dblow to her precious GhearG7t
CAnd every number the auctioneer called meant aFnother thing was sold that Cday
'Til everything was auctioned, and we stood there watching as they loaded it and dGrove it Caway.

CAt the day's first dawning, we woke this morning, there was nFothing for us to Cdo.
Nothing in the granary, no hay in the meadow, no Dcattle, no tractor, no Gtools.G7
CSo we loaded up the car with the clothes that we wore and a few Fthings we managed to sCave.
Mama read from the Book, we took one last look, and then we Gdrove aCway.
