Strumming
Capo: 2 Tuning: E A D G B E
This song builds up starting with a voice-and-acoustic-guitar ballad and ending with a driving rock ballad. The strumming patterns shown above are for the acoustic guitar part, which can be heard clearly in the first half of the song. After the bridge the acoustic strumming blends further back in the mix behind the electric rhythm guitar. You can either continue the acoustic strumming pattern or switch to the simpler electric rhythm guitar pattern, which basically consists of downstrokes on the downbeats. Below are the chord voicings I hear in the original recording. Some are a little out of the ordinary, but with a little practice they are easier than you might think, and sound great. In the chorus, make sure you don't forget to strum the low E string along with the other strings. The combination of all 6 notes together make these voicings lovely and strong, and make up for the fact that you may not have a full rhythm section behind you. The verses and chorus employ a progression / voicing / harmonization that became fairly common in the 2000s in ballads, and can be heard in such hits as Jimmy Eat World's Hear You Me, Howie Day's Collide, and more recently James Arthur's Say You Won't Let Go. Please ignore the block chord diagrams above the strumming pattern, which somehow appear automatically on the Ultimate Guitar platform and are not ideal correct for this arrangement. Please focus on the specific chord voicings shown on the tabs below. (Let me know how to delete the above diagrams!)
