Capo: 2
1. My Calm/Your Storm
There are two parts to this song:
Cliff -> Capo 2
Derek -> Clean (Key of E, which makes Cliff's part in D for you theory folks)
I will transcribe Cliff's part (which is the melody, really) as accurately
as possible. Derek's will follow at the end, and corresponds directly with
Cliff's, so if there are fans playing both parts, all the changes are at
the same time. Play along with the record and this will make more sense.
All chords are above the ~approximate~ lyric sung at that point. Again,
listen to the record, it will become very clear.
All chords are given relative to the Capo (ie in this case G is really an A,
A->B, etc)
Intro:
G D A D

3. Too Tender
THE EASY WAY - Simple to play, but doesn't sound like the original:
0x2100 E
x46600 C#m
x24400 B
x02200 A
4x6444 G#m
2x2200 F#m
INTRO/VERSE/CHORUS: E, C#m7, Bsus4, A9, repeat...
E|---------0---------------0---------------0------- etc...
B|-------0---0-----------0---0-----------0---0----- Follow the chord
G|-----1-------1-------1-------1-------6-------6--- progression using
D|---2-----------2---2-----------2---6-----------6- the same
A|---------------------------------4--------------- arpeggiated
E|-0---------------0------------------------------- picking pattern.
E ............................. C#m.................B...A
BRIDGE: G#m, A, G#m, A, G#m, A, F#m, B
E|-----------------4-------------------------------0---------------
B|-----------4---------------4---------------0---------------0-----
G|-------4-------4-------4-------4-------2-------2-------2-------2-
D|-----6-------6-------6-------6-------2-------2-------2-------2---
A|---------------------------------0-------------------------------
e|-4---------------------------------------------------------------
G#m ........................... A9..............................
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
THE HARD WAY - Sounds like the original, if you're able to do it...
Same as the easy way, with the following changes:
0x6200 E
X46200 C#m
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
THE BEST WAY - Put a 345- partial capo on the second fret. This is
how I play it. (I think Derek actually does it tuned DGDGAD, capo 2.)
Sounds like the original AND is easy to play. Same picking pattern:
ox40oo E | # = any string fingered # frets above the capo
x240oo C#m | 0 = capoed string not fingered
x022oo B | o = uncapoed string not fingered
3x00oo A | c = uncapoed string fingered at same fret as the capo
2x4222 G#m | x = any string not played
cx00oo F#m
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
VERSE 1:
Water water everywhere
And I complain about my thirst
The prescription's in my hand
While the pain I curse
CHORUS:
I know the longer
I know the harder
The walk will be
With my callused feet
And my too tender knees
VERSE 2:
Stumbled upon the truth
Wished it'd get out of my way
When I see the light
I pull down the shade
REPEAT CHORUS
GUITAR SOLO
BRIDGE:
If I were as smart as Christopher
I'd find a closet
If I were as weak as Samson was
I'd make a prophet
REPEAT CHORUS (with derek)
REPEAT CHORUS (derek overlapping)
I know the longer
(with my callused feet)
I know the harder
(and my too tender knees)
The walk will be
(I know the longer)
With my callused feet
(I know the harder the walk)
And my too tender knees
4. Suicidal Stones
Intro:
D Asus2 Bm-sus2 G
D Asus2 Bm-sus2 G
D Asus2 Bm-sus2 G
D Asus2 Bm-sus2 G
D Dsus4
Tab: (This is the actual strumming patterns; hope it helps)
-2--0--2----3-3--3-- This is the first half of the pair; I have tried to
-3--0--2----3-3--3-- approximate the timing with spacing between chords.
-2--2--4----0-0--0-- It also sound better if the first G is an upstroke,
-0--2--4----0-0--0-- and the following two G's are downstrokes.
-x--0--2----2-2--2--
-x--x--2----3-3--3--
-2--0--2--2-2----3-- This is the second half of the pair; again, timing is
-3--0--2--2-2----3-- approximated with spacing between chords.
-2--2--4----4----0-- If you can squeeze in an upstroke of those bottom two
-0--2--4----4----0-- strings between downstrokes of a Bmsus2, it will
-x--0--2----2----2-- sound great.
-x--x--2----2----3--
Then the D to Dsus4 is simply strumming, listen to the record (I know... but it
is the best way to get it all!)
(*Note on verse*: because E and Asus2 are both played on so many open
strings, you can get a clearer sound if right as you change chords,
you use your (free) pinky finger to mute the strings, almost as if you
were using the finger as a bar. E-mail me if you are lost on this.)
Chorus:
Asus2 E
Asus2 E
B B
Bridge:
C#sus2 Bsus2
(*Note on bridge*: This pair is played 8 times underneath Cliff's vocals.
To play it as on the record, pick through the chords, do not strum them.
A pattern focused on the high 4 strings will serve you best. The 7th
and 8th times, quickly strumming the high 4 right as you change, then
continuing to pick them will sound best. If you have questions on this,
let me know. That's what I'm here for :-) )
The pattern is exactly the same as Cliff's
-----------------------------
I know I kept repeating "Bridge" and "Chorus", but the song is the same
3 parts over and over, the main Em-G-Asus2-C thing, the chorus of
G-Em-C-D twice, and the C-'C-up' thing over the bridge. That's it!
Derek's part over the verse is almost impossible to get in one sitting,
so we have yet to totally tab it out. His solo will also come later, as
more people want the chords to the entire CD than the solo to one song.
I'll get to work on that stuff soon, though, I promise! But, if you do
have a second guitarist, adding his part over the chorus will really add
to the song. Here it is:
Chorus:
MGy abGility
Is a testimony to who you are
His chords are all different forms of Cliff's, and are listed below. All
the changes are at the same time. Again (yup, I know you are sick of
reading this!) it is very clear if you play over the record.
G C D Em C-up
You should note this is simply sliding the entire
C chord up a whole tone (2 frets), leaving the
open strings open. (Thus my name, C-up. It
is really like a harmonic D or something)
Derek:
E|-3---8---10---7--
B|-3---8---10---8--
G|-0---0----0---0--
D|-0---0----0---x--
A|-2---7----9---7--
e|-3---8---10---0--
G C* D* Em*
You should let you finger holding the 5th string drag,
muting out the 4th string. Try it, it isn't too hard.
