It turns out, Holly used his favourite key of A but had the guitar tuned down one step and thus the song sounds in Ab. So, even if you don’t want to take the trouble of retuning the guitar, I’d still suggest playing in A – it is much easier and definitely sounds more authentic. A lot of additional, very Holly-like quick chord changes can also be heard that later got buried in the overdubs.
