This is similar to classical guitar where you use you thumb and fingers to play however in Hybrid Picking you use a plectrum instead of your thumb and use your middle , 3rd finger and pinky to strum. For the notes he uses a plectrum , listen to nots in the song which are played a lot harder than the others
