Rachel Portman, OBE (b. 1960, Surrey, England) is a celebrated British composer, best known for her prolific work in film music. She began composing at age 14 and studied music at Worcester College, Oxford, where she wrote for student films and theatre . She made history in 1996 by becoming the first woman to win the Academy Award for Best Original Score for Emma (1996), and went on to receive Oscar nominations for The Cider House Rules (2000) and Chocolat (2001) �.
