Jesse Winchester was an American-Canadian singer-songwriter known for his gentle voice, poetic lyrics, and blend of folk, country, and rhythm & blues influences. Born in 1944 in the U.S., he moved to Canada during the Vietnam War to avoid the draft and later became a Canadian citizen. His music often reflected themes of love, longing, and Southern life. Revered by fellow musicians, Winchester earned a reputation as a songwriter’s songwriter. He returned to the U.S. after receiving amnesty in the late 1970s and continued recording and performing until his death in 2014.
