Tuning: C# F# B E G# C#
Specifically, those G chords don't always have to be played there, and in the chorus there's a D chord I didn't include. (For the intro, first verse, and pre-chorus, my strumming pattern is all right-hand muted eighth notes.) [Intro] Am [Verse]
Take a Amstep inside my mind, as my eyes are open wide In my slFeep I turn and toss, to rebuild the heart I lost EYou can Amtell me what you want, fool me once and love was lost Paper Fthin your words they haunt my dreams, the seams have come undone
[Pre-Chorus]
EDon't you Fdare say I'm gonna makAme it 'Cause I Fdon't believe a word you sayAm
[Chorus] (Strumming pattern here is all open syncopated rhythms as you feel are appropriate.)
Don't you Fdare say I'm gonna makAme it 'Cause I Fdon't believe a word you sayAm G There's a Fsickness living insideAm me You can Fspare me all your sympathyAm
[Verse 2] (First half of this is same as first verse, et al. Second half of this is as follows, with O being open chords and x being left-hand muting and all notes being eighth notes (total of 2 measures): OOxxOOxO xxxxOOxx)
Take a Amsecond of your time, realize you're wasting mine In the Fnight I lie awake, why rebuild a heart that breaks? EYou can Amtell me what you want, fool me once and love was lost Paper Fthin your words they haunt my dreams, the seams have come undone
[Chorus] (Same strumming pattern as first chorus)
Don't you Fdare say I'm gonna makAme it 'Cause I Fdon't believe a word you sayAm G There's a Fsickness living insideAm me You can Fspare me all your sympathyAm E
[Bridge] (This part is instrumental, but I do 6 beats of F, 2 beats of E, a measure of Am, a measure of C, a measure of F, and a measure of E before the second part of the bridge, all with the strumming pattern of the chorus. This isn't what's done on the studio version, but I like it better and it works in this tuning better. If it helps to visualize it:)
FX x x x X x Ex x AmX x x x CX x x x So Fspare me all your Esympathy
[Second Bridge] and over. I do one singular open chord every 2 measures for dramatic effect. So:)s4, and a measure of E, over and over. I do one singular open chord every 2 measures for dramatic effect. So:]
AmX x x x X x x x GX x x x X x x x FX x x x X x x x Esus4X x x x EX x x x AmI'm sitting waiting on the Gsun to rise F I know it never will,Esus4 it comes asE no surprise
(Here I change the strumming pattern to the same as the second half of the second verse: OOxxOOxO xxxxOOxO)
AmSo won't you stare into my Ghollow eyes F They look so hungry now, Esus4it comes as Eno surprise
(Here, I play it differently than on the record for live performance purposes, since the lyrics on the studio version overlap. I play it as I've written above, add 2 measures of dramatic syncopated left-hand muting, and jump back into the chorus. The studio version would simply have you stop playing at "it comes as no surprise." Feel free to do that if you have a second vocalist or something) [Chorus] (Same strumming pattern as first chorus)
Don't you Fdare say I'm gonna makAme it 'Cause I Fdon't believe a word you sayAm G There's a Fsickness living insideAm me You can Fspare me all your sympathyAm E So Fspare me all yEour sympathy
[Outro] (Right-hand muted eighth notes) Am
