(2x) ***************************** Prince William Pitt Leleʻiohoku II was a prince of the Hawaiian Kingdom and younger brother of the reigning monarch in 1874, King Kalākaua. Prince Leleiʻiohoku, his brother King Kalākaua, and his sisters Princess Likelike & Princess Lili'uokalani were skilled composers and collectively known as "Nā Lani ʻEhā" (The Heavenly Four). He was named heir apparent to the throne since his brother had no children, and many throughout the kingdom had high hopes for Leleʻiohoku as the future king because he was well-educated and kind. Tragically, however, he died at the young age of just 22 after contracting rheumatic fever. After his death, his sister Liliʻuokalani was named heir to the throne and later became the last reigning monarch of the Hawaiian Kingdom before its eventual illegal overthrow in 1893. ***************************** In writing this song, Leleiohoku was influenced by the music of the Mexican cowboys or vaqueros. Captain Vancouver presented a gift of longhorn cattle to King Kamehameha I, at Kealakekua, in 1793. A 10-year kapu (ban) was placed on the cattle to allow them to multiply and assure the island of a constant food supply. The wild cattle became a menace and Kamehameha III, in 1832, invited 3 of Mexico's best cowboys, (Kossuth, Ramon and Lauzada) to Waimea to teach the paniola's the art of roping. ***************************** Ua mau ke ea o ka ʻāina i ka pono
